Even more desert.

In the northwest of the Qatar peninsula these escarpments dot the flatness.

We had to hike a ways to get to the cool stuff.

We left the Toyota behind, because we didn't trust its all-terrain capabilities.

Sarah camped in the shade while Matt climbed the mushroom hill.

I am king of the mushroom!

Stop!

Camel Time!

I think this is a cement factory.

Many industrial oil facilities in the west of the peninsula have "NO PHOTOGRAPHY" signs up.  But, unlike North Korea, they don't seem to enforce it much.

Al Zubara Fort

The weirdest thing about this fort is that it was built in 1938.  For military purpose.

The other weird thing is that the fort is described as "on the coast" and "near Zubara town."

But the fact is, from the battlements you can see for miles in all directions, the flat boring rock-pan desert.  But you can't see the sea, and you can't see the town.  So... what is this fort protecting?

Action Shot!

Matt is storming the castle.

Sarah mounts the battlements.

That is the Qatar flag.

White for peace and red for blood.

Goodbye, Zubara Fort.

Back near town, on the northern edges of Doha is this other fort.

I don't know much about it.  I just happened to drive one of Sarah's co-teachers to work one day, and found it near the school.

As you can see from the sign, there is a
Moo-Moos Crossing here.

Sarah is clearly violating the protocol with her indecent use of pants.

Bitchin fort.

Christmas Dinner, 2008.

Sarah arranged a dinner for so-inclined coworkers at the Diplomatic Club.  Sarah and Matt are way at the top end of the table.
